Today Network News: December 18, 2009 - UNAMA: Afghanistan - the road system in Afghanistan, damaged by decades of war and a serious impediment to economic growth, faces reconstruction and rehabilitation. Without critical infrastructure such as roads, many of the provinces of Afghanistan are stopped from getting access to essential services such as education and health. Today, the Afghan government is working with the World Bank and United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOPS) to build roads through its National Rural AccessProgram (NRAP). This program recruits local people to build and rehabilitate thousands of kilometers of roads linking rural areas to urban centers. Mohammad Rasol, a local road workers, says that traveling to Kabul from the central highlands countrys often takes days on foot and road traffic. Now with a new road, the journey will be halved.
